DNA Paternity testing is the procedure in which genetic material is collected from the parties in question (IE. mother, father, child). The genetic material is then compared for similar genetic traits that were passed from one family member to the other. Other methods to determine paternity are also available but, are not near as accurate in the determination of relationship between the parties being tested. There are techniques used in the determination of genetic relationships, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism. Polymerase chain reaction is the most commonly used method in the identification of genetic fingerprints.

Once a genetic fingerprint is identified it can then be compared to the genetic fingerprint of another individual to determine a relationship. Genetic testing is the only accurate way to determine paternity. Legal Cases:

In the United States all genetic testing performed for use in court including; government child support agencies, welfare benefits offices and immigration authorities, and cases involving embassies overseas in petitions for family based immigration must be performed by an AABB accredited laboratory. These cases require strict chains of custody be followed and testing has to meet specific standards.
